English
Concord's English Language Arts curriculum prepares students for success in college and the workplace. Students learn writing, reading, listening, speaking, and critical thinking. Throughout the program, students learn to explore great ideas in literature. They learn to think independently, write with purpose, and to develop a sense of aesthetics.
GRADE 9
English 9 is an intensive course in literary genres and composition. Students read a variety of texts including novels, short stories, essays, poetry, and drama. Students learn to write informative, argumentative, and expressive pieces. They work to improve sentence structure and variety in their writing while developing style and voice. Students begin to learn synthesis essay writing. They are expected to use proper grammar and punctuation in all written work. All English 9 students complete a research project with MLA Citations.
GRADE 10
The major areas of focus in English 10 are reading literary and informative texts, speaking and listening, and language conventions. Students practice writing arguments to support claims with valid reasoning and strong evidence. At the end of the year they complete a debate research project.
GRADE 11
In English 11, students study American Literature. They are exposed to the major writers and themes of the American tradition. They read novels, short stories, essays, speeches, poetry, and drama. They also study non-fiction texts from a variety of media and write several synthesis essays. All juniors complete a major research paper using the MLA style sheet.
Advanced Placement English Language and Composition is an option for Concord juniors. In addition to completing the AP writing requirements, students read texts from different perspectives and analyze well-known literary works. Students who elect this course will be prepared for the Advanced Placement Examination in English Language & Composition.
GRADE 12
In English 12, students explore World Literature and hone their writing skills. Students are exposed to the major writers and literary themes from around the world. They study novels, short stories, essays, speeches, poetry, and drama. Students learn public speaking and presentation skills and complete a number of APA cited research papers throughout the year.
Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition is an option for Concord seniors. Students in this course demonstrate a mastery of English skills. In addition to completing the AP writing requirements, students read texts from different perspectives and analyze celebrated works of literature. Students who elect this course will be prepared for the Advanced Placement Literature Examination
